About 144 Million households do not have access to clean cooking fuel in India. Usage of firewood, crop residue and dung cake emits hazardous smoke which results in about 1 Million deaths annually. Firewood burning also leads to deforestation and GHG emmisions.

India on the other hand has largest cattle population in the world, which can generate enough animal manure to produce methane as clean cooking gas through biogas technology. But being a renewable and most efficient way of producing clean cooking gas, not many households are ready to adopt the technology. Reasons are shown in the table.
